Barry Ferrier's first venture into music theatre came after a chance encounter of a queue of people with guitars outside the Capitol Theatre led to a successful audition for the hit Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical Jesus Christ, Superstar. He played the role of one of Jesus' twelve disciples and an understudy role as a Pharisee, performing 8 shows a week for nearly two years, at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney and the Palais Theatre in Melbourne.
This ambitious production, produced by Harry M. Miller and directed by the legendary theatre director Jim Sharman, was a landmark in Australian theatre, featuring the perfectly cast Trevor White as Jesus - it became a launching pad for a generation of leading Australian music artists, including Jon English as Judas, John Paul Young as Annas, Marcia Hines as Mary, Reg Livermore as Herod, and was the starting place for Air Supply and the Ferrets. Music Director ws the formidable Patrick Flyn.
It was a huge scale epic with large stage machinery, a cast of 45 singers and a 50 piece orchestra plus rockband. A life changing experience for Doctor Baz. The cast recently had a 40 year reunion.
